Should Pocono Residents Limit Sugar Intake?

How Toxic Is SUGAR ?

Marshalls Creek, PA    New studies are indicating that Sugar is making American’s sick, and part of the problem is that we are ingesting too much sweetness, and it is now being linked to dangerous diseases such as diabetes type II, elevated cholesterol and cancer.  Also, just because you don’t add granulated sugar to your drinks and food, doesn’t protect you.  Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of California believes that processed foods which contain high fructose corn syrup are to blame for the fact that Americans are now consuming 130 pounds of added sugar per person, per year.  A nutritional study at the University of California, Davis found that when healthy individuals had 25% of their daily calories replaced with sugary drinks, their LDL – bad cholesterol levels increased within just two weeks.  Lewis Cantley, a Harvard professor has found that certain cancers, including colon and some breast, contain insulin receptors which cause tumors to grow in an insulin rich environment.  Finally, the challenge for us all is that sugar and syrup are found in many foods that you would never expect to contain sweeteners, such as bread, sauces, crackers, yogurt, peanut butter, and many drinks.

Some health advocates call the sugar overload in the US a Public Health Crisis and are calling for a general campaign to limit sugar additives just as tobacco and alcohol are limited.  Studies are also being conducted to test and show the effects of sugar on the brain and the addictive qualities of these substances, and the early reports have compared reactions to these sweeteners as being the same as cocaine.
