Focus on Women’s Health for Mother’s Day

Staying healthy, and in our lives for a long time is a great wish for all Mothers and Special Women close to us.  Turning our attention to the top risks to women’s health gives us the information to begin making changes to ensure a long and happy life.  Pay attention to her health today – Do you know your Mom’s blood pressure or cholesterol levels?

The top three health risks for women, as identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke.  These three diseases are the leading causes of death for women in general, and here are the steps you can take to reduce the risks.

Heart Disease – heart attacks and cardiac disease is the Number ONE killer of women.  Fewer than half of women know their blood pressure and cholesterol levels, so the first step is to know the numbers so you are aware if a risk exists.  Then support and promote a healthy lifestyle by maintaining a healthy weight, getting regular physical activity – and of course medical intervention if needed to bring down the important numbers.

Stroke – while most women are more concerned about breast cancer, strokes cause more deaths, and cause long lasting disabilities in women.  Acting quickly at the onset of a stroke is key to limiting the damages, and women often show unique symptoms.

Common stroke symptoms seen in both men and women:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg — especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

Women may report unique stroke symptoms:

  • sudden face and limb pain
  • sudden hiccups
  • sudden nausea
  • sudden general weakness
  • sudden chest pain
  • sudden shortness of breath
  • sudden palpitations

Cancer – you may be surprised to learn that Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women, followed by skin cancer and then breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.  Detecting cancer early, provides the best chance to beat it, so vigilance and attention to symptoms is essential.

Lung cancer symptoms may include—

  • Coughing that gets worse or doesn’t go away.
  • Chest pain.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Wheezing.
  • Coughing up blood.
